This exhibition presented the diverse ways in which thirteen local photographers capture a sense of place. The types of places explored included historic towns, large cities, neighborhood parks, waste facilities, museums and train stations that are located nearby, in the San Francisco Bay Area, or as far away as Paris and Hong Kong.
The photographers' approaches vary. Some focus on the living inhabitants of a place while others concentrate on inanimate objects, such as architecture and landmarks. For some, the goal is to present a perspective of a single location. For others, it is to depict a common vision of a particular type or set of places.
The result is a collection of more than forty black and white and color photographs that provide viewers with a distinct sense of what it is like to be looking at, standing in, and exploring a particular place. The scenes captured in these images are as unique as each photographer's perspective.
These photographs were produced under the guidance of Keith Lee, an instructor in the Photography Department at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. They were initially developed during a workshop offered at the college in 2004, titled "Capturing a Sense of Place."
